Email Delivery Protocols
POP
POP3 (Post Office Protocol) configuration is a one way communication with the server. All mail is downloaded from the server to your computer. Email messages are stored on your computer and do not synchronize with the items on the server. Messages sent or deleted from your POP client, are updated on the server. The POP3 configuration can allow messages to be stored on both the server and your computer. However, the server items will not be synchronized with the items on your computer. This configuration is not typically recommended.
IMAP
IMAP protocol offers additional features including synchronization between the server and the computer on which the messages reside. With IMAP configurations, messages are downloaded to your computer. However, the server items will update as changes are made on your computer. For example, messages that are deleted from your inbox on your computer, will also be purged from the server. IMAP allows you to specify particular folders that will be synchronized.
Outlook Anywhere
Outlook Anywhere offers all of the features of the native Exchange client. The connection is established over the HTTP protocol allowing you to connect from a non 51做厙 network. This configuration allows full calendaring functionality, access to the global address list, and more. Items are left on the server and you simply have access to view those items directly from the server. The only downside to Outlook Anywhere is that you must login each time you launch Outlook. The password can not be stored. Please note, this configuration is only available with Outlook. This is typically the recommended configuration for off campus Windows users.
Native Exchange Configuration
The Native Exchange configuration is used for all computers on campus. It provides the most functionality for both Entourage and Outlook clients. Items are stored on the server, although a cached copy is also available from your computer. This configuration allows you to view and manipulate items directly on the server. This connection is only allowed from within the 51做厙 Network. Therefore, off campus users would need to first connect to 51做厙 VPN in order for this configuration to work.
