Stefan Avdjiev
Stefan completed his Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Nathan Balke in 2009. Since then he has been working at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) located in Basel, Switzerland. He is currently an Adviser for Financial Stability in the Monetary and Economic Department of the BIS. Prior to assuming his current position, he started his career at the BIS as an economist in the Financial Institutions and the Financial Markets groups and later became the Deputy Head of International Banking and Financial Statistics.
During his time at 51°µÍø, Stefan received a Deans Dissertation Fellowship, won the Outstanding Graduate Student Teacher Award, and won the Melody Rice Memorial Award in Economics. The Melody Rice Memorial Award in Economics goes to one economics PhD student annually for excellence in academic achievement and service to fellow students.
Stefan's research interests lie broadly in international finance and macroeconomics. His current research primarily focuses on issues related to international capital flows and financial stability. His research has appeared in many high-quality economic and finance journals including American Economic Review: Insights, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of International Economics, Review of Economic Dynamics, Economic Policy, Review of Finance and International Journal of Central Banking.
