The Other Another Me
Meadows student creates art exhibit to benefit families ravaged by war
Meadows art students and faculty are banding together to help ease the struggles of families affected by war by holding a two-day art exhibition, “The Other Another Me,” Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17 in the Meadows School of the Arts Doolin Gallery. All proceeds from the sale of the artwork will be donated to New Humanity, an international non-governmental organization dedicated to generating family unity and universal fraternity.
The exhibit will feature donated paintings and sculptures by 12 area artists, six of whom are members of the Meadows community: Mariela Estrada (B.S. Biochemistry, with minors in Art and Spanish ’17), Diamond Gray (M.F.A. Art ’15); Sally Kim (B.F.A. Art ’17); JoElma Regis (B.A. Art ’17); David G. Smith (B.F.A. Art and B.A. Creative Computing ’18); and Adjunct Professor Kael Alford.
Event organizer JoElma Regis was inspired to create the fundraising exhibit while taking the “Why We Go to Auschwitz” class taught by Art History Associate Professor Janis Bergman-Carton. “The class had a great influence on me,” says Regis. “Learning more about the Holocaust and a number of monuments and artworks dedicated to other kinds of genocide and wars brought into light the deeper meaning behind each artwork. Those artists who have done great works dedicated to people who died or suffered in the past inspired me to create art dedicated to those who are suffering and dying at this time.”
Regis’s plan is to send the exhibit proceeds to New Humanity to benefit families with small children affected by war. “The needs are many, but at this time I intend to send the proceeds to refugee families in Syria and Iraq,” she says. “If I were in their place I would have wanted someone to do the same for me.
“This initiative has generated great interest and collaboration from other artists, classmates and professors, for which I am very grateful,” says Regis. “I believe that our small action here will reach out to many hearts.”
