Biographical Note:
Daniel Fried served as assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs from 2005 to 2009. From 2001 to 2005, he was a special advisor to President George W. Bush and a member of the National Security Council (NSC). From 1997 to 2000, he served as ambassador to Poland, and from 2000 to 2001 he was the principal deputy special advisor to the secretary of state for the New Independent States. After serving as the first special envoy for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility from 2009 to 2013, he was the first coordinator for sanctions policy from 2013 to 2017. He is currently a Weiser Family Distinguished Fellow at the Atlantic Council.
