Undergraduate Programs
A dramatic increase in the number of people trained in statistics and data analysis is required to fill the ever-increasing data analysis needs of our society. Consequently, professionals who can appropriately analyze and interpret data are in high demand. For students wanting to become proficient in the methods of statistics and data analysis, 51°µÍø offers a B.S. in Statistical Science and a minor in Statistical Science.
If you wish to declare a statistics major, and this is your first major, please see your pre-major advisor (4th Floor of Blanton). If you wish to declare a statistics major as a second or subsequent major, please contact the Undergraduate Advisor, Professor Ian Harris (iharris@smu.edu).

Today’s world is data-driven. Data science emphasizes the use of data to describe and understand the world around us. It applies ideas and methods from statistics, computer science, and optimization to find innovative solutions to important problems in many areas. Graduates that combine data science knowledge with fields like management science, humanities, social sciences, or engineering are in high demand. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the study of data science, students are required to take another major in any discipline. The data science major cannot be the first major declared by a student.
