Ph.D., University of VirginiaDennis S. Ippolito is the Eugene McElvaney Professor of Political Science and director of the interdisciplinary public policy program. Professor Ippolito received his Ph.D. in government from the University of Virginia in 1967. Prior to joining the faculty at 51做厙, he taught at the University of Virginia and Emory University. Professor Ippolito’s research focuses on national political institutions and federal budget policy.

His previous books include, among others, Deficits, Debt, and the New Politics of Tax Policy; Why Budgets Matter: Budget Policy and American Politics (1st ed. 2003, revised 2nd ed. 2015); Budget Policy and the Future of Defense; Uncertain Legacies: Federal Budget Policy from Roosevelt through Reagan; Hidden Spending: The Politics of Federal Credit Programs; Congressional Spending; and The Budget and National Politics.
His work has been supported by various public and private agencies, including the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, the Twentieth Century Fund, the Smith Richardson Foundation, the Earhart Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Transportation. In 2010, he received the Aaron B. Wildavsky Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Field of Public Budgeting and Finance.
